The Flash Technique
The Flash Technique is a recently developed and evidence-based approach to resolving distress related to traumatic experiences. It’s unique compared to other therapy approaches in that it doesn’t require talking about details of these memories or focusing extensively on them, allowing for processing and relief with minimal distress. The Flash Technique can also be helpful in alleviating anxiety and OCD as well, and is often used in conjunction with EMDR or other approaches.1
The technique involves identifying a target memory, as well as directed attention to a “positive focus” (e.g. an unrelated and positive memory, image, or music) with moments of interrupted focus, facilitating processing outside of conscious awareness.
